An Overview of
One of the Best Small Towns in America!
Newberry
County (population 34,160) is located in the central
Piedmont region of South Carolina between the Broad
and Saluda Rivers. It is less than one hour from the
metro areas of Columbia and Greenville-Spartanburg.
Lake Murray and Lake Greenwood, two large man-made lakes,
add miles of recreational and scenic shorelines to the
county. The mild climate and productive farmland make
it a good location for agriculture and forestry, while
a progressive attitude for economic development is attractive
to industries.
Founded
in 1785, Newberry County enjoys a proud
and diverse cultural heritage. Newberry College, a Lutheran-supported
liberal arts school,
was founded in 1856. The county seat of Newberry (population
10,542) offers the security of a small town with a convenient
downtown district. In 1996, Newberry was listed in Crampton's
The 100 Best Small Towns in America,
and in 2001, Sweitzer & Fields recognized Newberry
as one of The 50 Best Small Southern Towns.
The
Newberry
Opera House was renovated about ten years ago, and
it is a prime cultural center for the area! And yes,
we are a small town, but we now have "big city
facilities" like the new Firehouse
Convention Center...a GREAT place to have your next
meeting or conference!
